Video editing timeline

Dual monitor supportDual monitor support

  • Take advantage of multiple monitor support to work in a more traditional editorial configuration.

When using multiple monitors, Smoke will display a fullscreen Media Panel on a secondary monitor while Timeline and compositing views are displayed on the main monitor.

Media panel viewing optionsMedia Panel Views

  • Visually review clips in the Media Panel to assess shots and judge takes.

Resize and scrub media as a thumbnail within the Media Panel to visually review clips. Use the fullscreen Media Panel to view entire collections of media and take better advantage of the dual view to organize media within Projects or Libraries.

Accelerated and optimized performanceSmoke video editing software: accelerated, improved performance

  • Work quickly with increased interactivity, easier navigation of large media folders, and improved performance when working with 3D scenes.

    Performance improvements include:

    • Increased interactivity when working with multiple Action nodes
    • An optimized rendering strategy that creates frames in a single pass, without having to render each intermediate layer
    • Easier navigation of large media folders in the MediaHub
    • Improved 3D compositing performance in Action

3D tracking

Analyze source footage to reproduce original camera movement and realistically composite elements into your shots.

With the new 3D tracker, you can better composite elements into a scene respecting real-world position, motion, and scale relative to the objects in a video sequence. A generated point cloud that references locations in 3D space makes it possible to snap an object into a specific location within a shots

ConnectFX node-based compositing

Change the way you approach effects when editing with a powerful node-based compositing environment accessible directly from the timeline.

With ConnectFX, editors have a customizable palette of visual effects tools for simple transformations, advanced 3D compositing, and plug-in type effects. Move quickly from the timeline to ConnectFX using any segment, adjustment layer, or group of segments, and Smoke will build a node graph representing effects that have already been started in the timeline.

Powerful compositing in Action

Go beyond 2D layer-based effects with Action, a true 3D compositing environment within the video editing timeline.

Action brings together keying, tracking, transformation, deformation, lighting, and shading tools in an interactive 3D workspace.

Now available as a timeline effect, editors can:

  • Create extruded 3D text
  • Displace and warp image layers in true 3D space
  • Add 3D lens flares, rays, blooming, glints, glows, and shadows
  • Work with built-in primitives or imported meshes without leaving the timeline

3D text and geometry

Import true 3D geometry and create dynamic 3D titles with bevels, textures, and per-character animation controls.

3D workflow with Maya

With support for the FBX asset exchange and Alembic open interchange formats, Smoke can integrate true 3D geometry directly into composites.

Effects tools where you need them

Timeline FX brings new effects tools, enhanced rendering performance, and the ability to reorder effects without leaving the video editing timeline.

With the redesigned Timeline FX feature set:

  • Effects are created using the same interactive 16-bit engine as ConnectFX and can be promoted to ConnectFX with near one-to-one mapping in the schematic view
  • Effects can easily be reordered at the timeline level, for a flexible, nonlinear workflow
  • Rendering requirements are reduced as frames are rendered on the fly during playback, enabling you to quickly see the results of an effect

Dynamic trimming

Tell your story more easily with dynamic trimming tools for adjusting timing and timeline navigation.

Make precise timing decisions quickly with a visual representation of trim operations using a new Trim View in Smoke.

Accelerated and optimized performance

Work quickly with increased interactivity, easier navigation of large media folders, and improved performance when working with 3D scenes.

Timeline-based creative workflow

Get started quickly with a familiar and intuitive editorial timeline workflow.

A familiar video editing environment enables you to center your creative work around an easy-to-use, track-based, nonlinear editor (NLE) workflow and puts powerful visual effects tools at your fingertips.

Customizable UI and project setup

A flexible UI is optimized for fast navigation in media, editing, and import workflows.

Tabbed navigation makes it easier to move between media management, timeline editing, and conforming tasks. Manage and customize your projects with specialized configuration templates based on industry-standard resolutions, frame rates, and bit depths.

Customizable keyboard shortcuts

  • Customize your keyboard shortcuts in Smoke or use the industry-standard keyboard shortcut layout based on Apple Final Cut Pro to navigate video editing timelines quickly.

Smoke and FCP X: better integration

An enhanced XML workflow with Apple Final Cut Pro X makes it easier to move between editing and effects.

Improved XML support offers more accurate translation of speed changes, timeline effects, and improved interoperability when moving projects from Final Cut Pro X to Smoke. Smoke sequences can now be exported to an XML format with an accompanying QuickTime media file that can be imported by Final Cut Pro X and DaVinci Resolve.

Blackmagic Design card and device support

Take advantage of more flexible hardware configurations with the addition of support for video I/O using Blackmagic Design cards and devices.
