Mograph


Cinema 4D’s MoGraph toolset revolutionized the industry, and Release 18 builds upon that foundation with powerful new tools and an improved workflow.


Voronoi Fracturing

Non-destructive destruction

With the new Fracture Voronoi object you can tear down walls. Systematically shatter any object into procedural fragments using virtually anything to control the distribution of the shattered pieces. Create artistic procedural geometry using splines, polygon objects or particles. Fracture Voronoi is always live which means you can change elements at any time. As a native MoGraph object it works seamlessly with Dynamics and all the effectors and falloffs you love.


Cloner Enhancements

Cinema 4D’s Cloner object revolutionized motion graphics, and in R18 we’ve made it even better. With the new Honeycomb Array mode you can easily create brick walls and hexagonal grids. Conform grid arrays and honeycombs to the shape of an object or spline, and maintain the clone spacing when you increase count with Per-Step mode. There’s also a new option to scale clones automatically based on polygon size when cloning on an object.

  
Modeling

 

Cinema 4D Release 18 includes powerful new tools for cutting objects and key modeling features for game development and exchange with other applications.


New Knife Tools

It slices, it dices

Cinema 4D Release 18 truly is a cut above the rest, with all-new interactive knife tools. The new Line Cut tool lets you draw cuts across one or even multiple objects and tweak them on-the-fly with an interactive preview. You can then lock in new edges, remove parts or split objects based on the cuts you made. With the new Plane Cut tool you can create new edges using the Local, World or Camera axes, or draw a line to define the plane and adjust the position and rotation of the cut numerically or with a viewport manipulator. The Loop/Path Cut tool creates symmetrical loops or paths based on a proportional or absolute distance to the surrounding edges, and preserves curvature when creating new edges. All three new tools are available as separate commands so you can easily access the desired mode via shortcut or Commander.


Baking Displacement

Release 18 features an optimized raycast algorithm for baking sculpted elements as displacements and normal maps - making it possible to animate simple geometry and render highly detailed characters.


Set UVW from projection

With the Set UVW from Projection tool you can quickly create and update UV coordinates for multiple objects and even entire hierarchies based on common projections.

  
Animation

 
Object tracking represents another evolution in MAXON’s effort to make visual effects tools easy and accessible to everyone in Cinema 4D. Changes in constraints, quaternions and priorities are part of a comprehensive improvement of character animation features and the underlying code.


Object Tracker

Integrate your Cinema 4D creations into real-world footage with Object Tracking, the next step in MAXON’s effort to make VFX workflows and tools accessible to everyone. Reconstruct the motion of the camera and any number of objects to transform a video file into a 3D world. Add 2D User Tracks for key features of the object and assign them to the Object Tracker – then reconstruct the object based on just the tracks or with the help of reference geometry. You can now seamlessly integrate any number of 3D objects into real-world footage with ease.


Parent Constraint

Passing objects from one parent to another is a complex task in 3D animation. Release 18 includes a new parent constraint workflow that is extremely reliable and makes it easy to achieve consistent results.

 
Rendering

  

Lots of new shading options make it easier than ever before to achieve fast, realistic renders.


Thin Film Shader

Render iridescent surfaces like bubbles, oil slicks, fingerprints and other oily residue with the help of the new Thin Film shader in Cinema 4D Release 18.


Inverse Ambient Occlusion

Inverting the normals when calculating Ambient Occlusion provides a mask of the exposed surfaces, which can be layered to create worn edges or subsurface scattering effects.


Variation Shader Enhancements

Randomize the texture and color on multiple objects or polygon groups using a nearly unlimited number of base textures to create more variation than ever before.


Reflectance Multi-Edit

Save precious production time by simultaneously editing Reflectance parameters of multiple materials. Additional helpers in the Material Manager indicate similar reflectance to streamline this workflow even more.

As always, Cinema 4D Release 18 focuses on a smooth and intuitive workflow, both within your 3D environment and as you exchange data with other applications in your pipeline.


ViewportEnhancements

Preview your scene and model more effectively with the help of Cinema 4D Release 18’s enhanced OpenGL viewport. Get a better sense of the shape and placement of your models with Screen-Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) and preview detailed displacements in real-time with GPU Tessellation. Use Reflectance Preview to get an idea of how multi-layered reflectance will look on your model, and enjoy a prettier preview especially when utilizing an all-reflectance workflow.

Substance Engine Integration

Allegorithmic’s Substances are parametric materials compatible with most 3D applications and game engines. Download compiled Substances and utilize them to surface your Cinema 4D objects. This fully-integrated implementation offers outstanding workflow and flexibility plus options to cache Substances on disk for better performance.

Optimized Preferences

The User Participation data you’ve been sharing has helped us optimize some of the defaults in Cinema 4D to make it easier to use out-of-the-box. The standard Phong angle has been reduced, the figure object now has an appropriate height, and Select Visible Elements is disabled by default in most selection tools. The default render output is now 720p. These are just a few of the many tweaks we’ve made to improve your daily workflow based on your feedback.

CINEMA 4D R15 - the ultimate team player to render high-res stills and animations. With CINEMA 4D R15 Team Render you can easily exploit all the excess processing power in your local network to quickly preview scenes and render high-resolution stills or final animations. Team Render is a groundbreaking new approach to network rendering that minimizes setup time and maximizes performance using a peer-to-peer architecture and automatic discovery of render clients via Bonjour. Click to add computers to your team, and quickly distribute complex render tasks across your entire network. Quickly preview scenes by sending the results of the Team Render directly to the Picture Viewer, or batch multiple jobs with the Render Queue. Either way, Team Render can be managed completely within the CINEMA 4D
interface.
 
Peer-to-Peer Performance
Team Render is an all-new network rendering concept that uses peer-to-peer communication to distribute render tasks. Because there's no bottleneck at a central server, the assets required to render your scene get to each client quicker. This means clients spend time rendering instead of waiting for assets.
 
Render 1000 Frames, or just 1
Utilize the power of your team to easily render the frames of an animation or to distribute the buckets of a still frame. Machines share the workload to calculate caches for Global Illumination, Ambient Occlusion and Subsurface Scattering so you can utilize advanced rendering features and still meet the deadline. * The speed comparison was made using a typical network environment to better simulate a normal office network situation. The clients consisted of computers ranging from quad-core Windows PCs (2.5 GHz) to a 24-core Mac Pro (2.66 GHz). The results cannot be applied 1:1 to other networks but are a good reflection of the increase in speed that can be expected.

More Quality. More Speed.
CINEMA 4D has long offered irradiance caching as faster alternative to the render-intensive but extremely precise QMC method for Global Illumination (GI). A newly developed Irradiance Cache algorithm now delivers much better results in even less time! Caches are calculated per frame, which eliminates pre-calculation of the entire animation and delivers much faster feedback. And peer-to-peer distribution of animations to clients across a network has been made easier with Team Render. Global Illumination offers powerful presets and greater flexibility than ever, with the option to mix and match the method used to calculate primary and secondary illumination.  Use Light Mapping to quickly calculate extreme diffuse depths. Ambient Occlusion can now be calculated more quickly based on the new Irradiance Cache method.
 
Intel Embree Raytracing
The more complex the better – and fast as lightning: The Physical Renderer in CINEMA 4D R15 uses Intel’s Embree raytracing engine whose highly optimized algorithms increase render power by up to 300% - without any reduction in image quality! ALL-NEW BEVEL TOOL - CUT CORNERS WITHOUT COMPROMISE
Create clean and controllable bevels in CINEMA 4D R15. Bevels catch the light and make your 3D models appear more realistic, but in the past they've made a mess of a mesh. The all-new Bevel tool in CINEMA 4D R15 offers an extreme level of control so you can achieve the look and mesh flow you desire. Interactively bevel points, edges and polygons directly in the view using new tool handles, or enter exact values and access additional options in the Attribute Manager. Create a rounded bevel with adjustable tension or use splines drawn in the Attribute Manager or in the view to control the edge profile. Limit the bevel amount to prevent edges from overlapping, and customize the mitering and ending options. Use the Solid mode in conjunction with a Subdivision Surface to easily add sharp bevels to hard surfaces while maintaining the basic shape of the model. Enjoy the ultimate flexibility of the new Bevel tool in CINEMA 4D R15.
 
LET THINGS SLIDE
Slide and clone complete edge loops and keep things curvy. With the Slide tool in CINEMA 4D R15 you can adjust multiple edges, and complete edge loops, with a single drag. Adjust the slide with interactive viewport handles or specify a slide distance based on a fixed value or a proportional offset from the surrounding loops. Duplicate loops to get more detail by simply control-dragging, and optionally preserve the curvature of the existing mesh. The new Slide tool offers fast and flexible control, whether you're a character animator optimizing the edge flow of a model for rigging or a technical modeler dialing in a surface of your object.

3D TYPOGRAPHY REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
CINEMA 4D offers a comprehensive typography toolset for editing text.Gain advanced typographic control over MoText and Text Splines, interactively kerning individual characters directly in the 3D view. Adjust kerning, tracking, baseline shift, horizontal and vertical scale numerically in the Attribute Manager or by dragging intuitive handles. Apply MoGraph effectors or use XPresso to create complex animation - your text and typographic controls can be edited at any time.

 
  
Sculpting
  

SCULPTING – CONSTANTLY BEING ENHANCED!
Enhanced sculpting features in CINEMA 4D R15. With CINEMA 4D Release 15, you'll enjoy significant enhancements to the Sculpt feature introduced in R14. Sculpt directly on any polygon model, without adding Sculpt tags or switching to another application, to rough out the shape of a model or easily make PoseMorph targets. Mirror Sculpt strokes and masks across any axis and hide masked parts of a model with a single click. Mask ridges and crevices, or enhance detail directly with the new Amplify Brush. Use new Line, Lasso, Polygon and Rectangle tools to define masks or sculpt with geometric precision. Use the new Project Mesh feature to adapt a new simplified mesh to multiple sculpt objects, creating a single Sculpt object with an optimized edge flow and  all the detail of your original sculpt.
  
Mirroring and Masking
Stay focused and keep on sculpting. The powerful Symmetry options within each sculpt brush now support CINEMA 4D's workplane, so you can easily mirror strokes across an offset axis. Keep your strokes fast and fluid by focusing on one side of the model, and use the new Sculpt Symmetry option to mirror strokes across the mesh or even equalize the sculpting on both sides. To further focus on small sections of the sculpt, simply hide polygons using a mask.
  
Mesh Projection
Squeeze out every detail with optimized topology. Combine multiple Sculpt objects into a single sculpt with optimized edge flow using the new Project Mesh feature. Whether you need more edges to sculpt appendages or just want to optimize the mesh for animation, you can model a clean topology over your existing sculpt and quickly adapt it to the final shape with all the sculpt details intact based on your desired subdivision settings.

Texture Manager

Easily relink hundreds of textures by just selecting a single folder containing the bitmaps. Switch between low and high-resolution bitmaps using find and replace operations on texture paths. View the real path of textures stored with localized file names and easily change multiple textures between local or absolute paths. Cinema 4D on Windows 10

There are no known Cinema 4D issues that are Windows 10-specific but your user experience might differ, depending on your hardware. Our closed field test showed that some but not all GPU drivers or input device drivers work less reliably on the new operating system, especially when using third-party plugins that rely on these drivers. This can change anytime if these drivers are updated, which means that no general guidelines exist regarding which graphics cards will be affected. For users of Intel HD2500 / HD4000 GPUs, we don't recommend the use of Windows 10 because they will most likely not receive the necessary updates.

QuickTime: Some versions could not be used with Windows 10. However, we received positive feedback with regard to using the current version 7.7.9 with Windows and Cinema 4D. According to the website, there is no official support for Windows 10. Download: https://support.apple.com/downloads/quicktime


Graphics cards

Generally speaking, Cinema 4D and BodyPaint 3D support all OpenGL 4.1-capable graphics cards. Nevertheless, we recommend using a dedicated 3D graphics card with an AMD or NVIDIA chip set. High-performance graphics chips are currently already available in mid-range laptops.

Make sure that you always use the most current certified graphics card driver (no beta versions).

Important notice

MAXON is not responsible for the compatibility of individual graphics cards with the OpenGL mode. Due to the large number and types of available chip sets, operating systems and driver versions we cannot guarantee the compatibility of all systems.

The technical specifications of MAXON products are constantly changing. Please use the most current demo version of the software to test its compatibility on your computer.


Regarding NVIDIA 3D Vision

A quad buffered graphics card is required to use NVIDIA's 3D Vision Shutter glasses for viewing the stereoscopic display in Cinema 4D.

 Licensing


For Standalone (Node-Locked) licenses upon purchase you will receive via email a set of serial numbers to be used for activating your software.

For educational institutions and production facilities managing multiple licenses of CINEMA 4D, Release 12 introduces robust license server technology that makes the management of numerous licenses and groups of licenses with various module configurations a breeze.

With the MAXON License Server (hereinafter referred to as “License Server“) serial numbers can be allocated, managed and monitored from a main computer within a local network (or from wherever you have a functioning TCP/IP v4 for port 5325 (or another available port)). This is especially useful for environments in which several CINEMA 4D versions are running simultaneously, such as educational institutions.

The advantages of using the License Server at a glance:

  • A serial number must not be entered for each individual computer. Instead, the License Server will allocate a serial number for each individual computer, based on a allocated multi-license number.
  • The serial numbers will be allocated dynamically: If CINEMA 4D is quit on one computer, the serial number allocated to that computer will be made available for another computer within the network after the lease time expires (see below).
  • A Client can lease a serial number for a longer period of time (as defined by the administrator) and is thereby not required to contact the License Server online during this period. This can, for example, be used by those working from home for several days and who cannot access the License Server.

Note: Multi-license serial numbers are always final, registered serial numbers, i.e. these are not temporary serial numbers limited in their validity to three months, as is the case with normal CINEMA 4D serial numbers / registration codes.

 

NEW: Command line licenses must be purchased separately for $195.00.
(Command line licenses are critical when using 3rd party render queue managers like Qube or Deadline)

Maxon offers the following Upgrades and Support options:

Maxon Service Agreement (MSA)

The MAXON Service Agreement (MSA) is optionally available to MAXON customers. Participating customers are kept up-to-date with the newest releases of CINEMA 4D and/or BodyPaint 3D. As soon as a new software version is available, MSA participants will receive these automatically, allowing them to immediately take advantage of all new features and advancements.

The MAXON Service Agreement is ideal for companies working with fixed budgets - no more surprises when planning next year's expenses. In addition to the most up-to-date software version, MSA participants also receive enhanced services such as expanded use of software or discounted admission to special events, and more.

You’re on the go and don’t always work in the office? Software licenses included in the MSA can also be installed onto a second computer (e.g., a laptop for working on the go or on a computer at your home office) as long as both installations are not used simultaneously.

  • Upgrades: updates/upgrades are available electronically for users with active Maxon Service Agreement.

  • Support:Technical assistance regarding use of the Serviced Products by means of phone or email. Technical Support can encompass:
    • Providing general guidance on how to diagnose and correct use issues involving Serviced Products;
    • Providing assistance relating to the use of features available within Serviced Products;
    • Providing general advice on how to best approach a specific task by use of features available in Serviced Products; 
    • Supporting system administration activities specifically related to installing and running Serviced Products; 
    • To the extent reasonably possible, providing practical workarounds to issues that interfere with Customer’s enjoyable and/or productive use of Serviced Products.

Upgrades

CINEMA 4D Release 18 and BodyPaint 3D Release 18 are scheduled to ship in September through MAXON and its authorized dealers. Customers with an active MAXON Service Agreement (MSA) valid through September 2nd will automatically receive the upgrade. Current customers who do not have an active MSA can purchase an MSA before the end of August and be eligible for a free upgrade. New customers who purchase from now until August 31st will automatically receive a one-year MSA with their purchase.
