MAXON's BodyPaint 3D is the ultimate tool for creating high-end textures and unique sculptures.
Wave goodbye to UV seams, inaccurate texturing and constant back-and-forth switching to your 2D image editor. Say hello to hassle-free texturing that lets you quickly paint highly detailed textures directly on your 3D objects.
BodyPaint 3D also offers a comprehensive set of sculpting tools that let you turn a simple object into a detailed work of art.
When it comes to texturing tools, BodyPaint 3D is packed with a huge array of popular image editing tools. Brushes, selection tools, filters, erasers and much more. BodyPaint 3D can even utilize Photoshop .abr brushes. Full support for tablets ensures that painting with a pen feels just as natural as it does in popular 2D image editors. And of course BodyPaint 3D can deal with image files as large as 16k and with 16-bit and 32-bit color depth.
Compared to 2D painting, perhaps the most exciting feature BodyPaint 3D offers is projection painting. This powerful mode eliminates the need to spend hours creating perfect UV maps. You simply paint what you would like to see on your 3D model, apply the projection and then BodyPaint 3D will quickly adjust your painting so it fits your UVs perfectly - even if there are differing UV sizes and seems.
BodyPaint 3D was created for all 3D artists and includes free plugins to connect with 3ds Max, Maya and Softimage. All other applications can exchange files with BodyPaint 3D using one of the numerous available file formats (e.g. OBJ, FBX or COLLADA).
Bodypaint 3D Features
MAXON BodyPaint 3D features an arsenal of UV editing solutions that ensure your models and their materials line up properly.
Painting in 3D is governed by UVs, a set of coordinates that relate polygons to texturing areas. Properly designed UV coordinates are essential to successful painting and quality texturing in 3D. Because almost all 3D models involve contours in 3D space, standard projections like spherical and flat mapping can never provide distortion-free texturing. Each model must be set up with correctly aligned UVs prior to painting, just like taping off the trim in a room prior to painting.
Optimal Mapping and LSCM Unwrapping
BodyPaint 3D includes numerous tools that help you achieve the best UV map for each individual model. You can utilize one of three different algorithms, including Cubic Optimal Mapping, to automatically optimize your UV coordinates and remove overlapping points.
The Relax UV tool adjusts the size of UVs in relation to their corresponding polygons, and the UV Terrace tool lets you easily include additional geometry in an existing UV map. The Store and Remap UV features allow you to easily remap areas of UV coordinates to eliminate seams. Using BodyPaint 3D's powerful Interactive Mapping feature you can generate UVs based on standard projection types for different regions of a model. Of course, BodyPaint 3D also includes Move, Scale, Rotate, Shear and other tools to let you manually tweak individual UV coordinates.
The LSCM unwrapping method, which lets you unwrap a model's UVs based on defined seams, also comes in handy when working with complex shapes. Whether adjusting UVs for a low-res game model or a high-res matte painting, BodyPaint 3D provides the UV tools you can rely on when the UV mapping is not as perfect as the model you have built.
Painting & Texturing
RAYBRUSH AND MULTIBRUSH TECHNOLOGY
MAXON BodyPaint 3D's exclusive RayBrush technology allows you to paint directly onto a raytraced image. RayBrush eliminates the need to continually switch applications or perform test renders. You can see the actual rendered effect while painting in any channel, including reflection, transparency and bump. You can even paint on multiple textures at once when in RayBrush mode. This outstanding feature takes advantage of MAXON's award-winning render engine, known for speed and quality.
With BodyPaint 3D you can paint an entire material with a single stroke. Each brush can paint up to ten channels simultaneously. A single brush stroke can be used to affect color, bump, specularity, reflection, transparency and other properties. There is no need to match the various channels in your 3D application.
All your favorite painting tools are available in BodyPaint 3D, including Clone, Smear, Sponge, Dodge and Burn tools. The standard brush tool includes pressure, hardness, size, bitmap, distortion, rotation, jitter and other parameters for hundreds of painting possibilities. The effect of any parameter can be controlled by the pressure, tilt, direction or finger wheel of your graphics tablet. Over 200 presets are provided with BodyPaint 3D, representing a variety of natural media and special effects.
A real highlight of BodyPaint 3D is that it now supports the .abr format for Adobe Photoshop-compatible brushes. BodyPaint 3D artists can now take advantage of vast resources available in the Photoshop community- thousands of brushes are available, many of them are free; and we've even added over 1,400 brushes to the brush preset libraries.
With BodyPaint 3D you can paint in the 2D view, in the shaded 3D view or in the raytraced 3D view. Changes that you make in the 3D view are applied to the 2D view in realtime and vice-versa. For the first time ever you can open and edit multiple 3D views. This enables you to quicky switch between views – there is no need to adjust camera settings. For example, you can use separate views for important or difficult to reach regions.
Projection painting offers hitherto unknown comfort when painting textures onto complex geometry. Visible seams at UV edges are now a thing of the past. The detachable projection layers in particular make this process easier by letting objects or images be placed freely before the projection is applied.
With projection painting enabled, you can paint onto a virtual glass plate over the model and subsequently project this painting onto the actual textures. This powerful feature supports all of BodyPaint 3D's painting tools and provides full control over the projection and final appearance of your paint strokes. Projection painting even allows users to paint across multiple objects with a single stroke to eliminate seams. Copy and paste paint between layers. You can copy and paste between layers while in projection paint mode and you can even join two separate images with perfect blending and distortion.
Layering in the 3rd Dimension
This familiar layering system operates much like 2D graphics applications, giving you the power to combine various effects and experiment with confidence. In addition to its own B3D format, MAXON BodyPaint 3D can read and write layers and masks in PSD and TIF file formats. Each layer can be assigned a unique opacity and mix mode. BodyPaint 3D also features a real-time preview of layer transformations so you can easily position, scale, rotate, skew and distort layers until your composition is just right.
You can also define a mask in any layer, work with alpha channels or apply different blend modes to layers. Even .psd files can be read and their individual layers or layersets easily accessed. The Layer Shader makes it possible to quickly assign filters or procedural shaders to images. BodyPaint 3D is second-to-none when compared to conventional 2D image editing applications, and is ideal for high-end compositing and montage work.
BodyPaint 3D offers a wide variety of intuitive and highly flexible selection tools. All the common tools, like Lasso or Magic Wand, can also be used in the 3D view. Even better, you can easily transform UV selections or polygon selections into image selections. Of course, selections of all kinds can be stored for later use.
ORGANIC SURFACES MADE EASY

Smoothly paint continuous strokes with the Steady Stroke option. Use special drag options to precisely place Sculpt Stamps, and easily create repetitive stamps with the Repeat tool. Sculpt finer details with the help of Masks and Stencils. Create and share your own stamps and stencils, or take advantage of the extensive preset library provided in CINEMA 4D.
Mirroring and Masking
Stay focused and keep on sculpting.
The powerful Symmetry options within each sculpt brush now support CINEMA 4D's workplane, so you can easily mirror strokes across an offset axis. Keep your strokes fast and fluid by focusing on one side of the model, and use the new Sculpt Symmetry option to mirror strokes across the mesh or even equalize the sculpting on both sides. To further focus on small sections of the sculpt, simply hide polygons using a mask.
Use your own models or one of the base meshes provided in the Sculpt presets library. The library's generic human, animal and dinosaur forms provide a great start for many sculpting projects. Simply double-click any mesh, click Subdivide a few times and start sculpting.
Squeeze out every detail with optimized topology.
Combine multiple Sculpt objects into a single sculpt with optimized edge flow using the new Project Mesh feature. Whether you need more edges to sculpt appendages or just want to optimize the mesh for animation, you can model a clean topology over your existing sculpt and quickly adapt it to the final shape with all the sculpt details intact based on your desired subdivision settings.
With CINEMA 4D’s integrated sculpting, you can freeze and deform your sculpted creations without the need to bake them. Optimize the scene and prepare it for export to game engines or other applications by baking the sculpt to lower-polygon geometry with automatic creation of Ambient Occlusion, displacement and normal maps.

Cinema 4D on Windows 10
There are no known Cinema 4D issues that are Windows 10-specific but your user experience might differ, depending on your hardware. Our closed field test showed that some but not all GPU drivers or input device drivers work less reliably on the new operating system, especially when using third-party plugins that rely on these drivers. This can change anytime if these drivers are updated, which means that no general guidelines exist regarding which graphics cards will be affected. For users of Intel HD2500 / HD4000 GPUs, we don't recommend the use of Windows 10 because they will most likely not receive the necessary updates.
QuickTime: Some versions could not be used with Windows 10. However, we received positive feedback with regard to using the current version 7.7.9 with Windows and Cinema 4D. According to the website, there is no official support for Windows 10. Download: https://support.apple.com/downloads/quicktime
Generally speaking, Cinema 4D and BodyPaint 3D support all OpenGL 4.1-capable graphics cards. Nevertheless, we recommend using a dedicated 3D graphics card with an AMD or NVIDIA chip set. High-performance graphics chips are currently already available in mid-range laptops.
Make sure that you always use the most current certified graphics card driver (no beta versions).
To find out more about processing speed, CINEBENCH test results can be found online.
MAXON is not responsible for the compatibility of individual graphics cards with the OpenGL mode. Due to the large number and types of available chip sets, operating systems and driver versions we cannot guarantee the compatibility of all systems.
The technical specifications of MAXON products are constantly changing. Please use the most current demo version of the software to test its compatibility on your computer.
Regarding NVIDIA 3D Vision
A quad buffered graphics card is required to use NVIDIA's 3D Vision Shutter glasses for viewing the stereoscopic display in Cinema 4D.
An overview of graphics cards that meet all requirements can be found here.
For Standalone (Node-Locked) licenses upon purchase you will receive via email a set of serial numbers to be used for activating your software.
For educational institutions and production facilities managing multiple licenses of CINEMA 4D, Release 12 introduces robust license server technology that makes the management of numerous licenses and groups of licenses with various module configurations a breeze.
With the MAXON License Server (hereinafter referred to as “License Server“) serial numbers can be allocated, managed and monitored from a main computer within a local network (or from wherever you have a functioning TCP/IP v4 for port 5325 (or another available port)). This is especially useful for environments in which several CINEMA 4D versions are running simultaneously, such as educational institutions.
The advantages of using the License Server at a glance:
- A serial number must not be entered for each individual computer. Instead, the License Server will allocate a serial number for each individual computer, based on a allocated multi-license number.
- The serial numbers will be allocated dynamically: If CINEMA 4D is quit on one computer, the serial number allocated to that computer will be made available for another computer within the network after the lease time expires (see below).
- A Client can lease a serial number for a longer period of time (as defined by the administrator) and is thereby not required to contact the License Server online during this period. This can, for example, be used by those working from home for several days and who cannot access the License Server.
Note: Multi-license serial numbers are always final, registered serial numbers, i.e. these are not temporary serial numbers limited in their validity to three months, as is the case with normal CINEMA 4D serial numbers / registration codes.
NEW: Command line licenses must be purchased separately for $195.00.
(Command line licenses are critical when using 3rd party render queue managers like Qube or Deadline)
- The purchase includes (100x) seats / nodes.
- Must already own at least 1x Cinema 4D license and 1x Maxon license server.
